Is Education Really Free?

Lately, I have been reading and watching documentaries on Education. More and more people are talking about the price of education. It's a well known fact, of course, that many counties in metro Atlanta, have been dealing with budget cuts and it has taken its toll on the educational system. A system that was designed to offer a place for mental development, whether socially or academically is being placed on the back burner due to a lack of funding. Students walk into classes with books that their parents used and possibly grandparents too! It baffles me. We encourage children to continue to come to class because of the possibilities available but yet we fail, time and time again, to offer them what they deserve. There are even teachers and administrators telling their students that "there is just not enough money". As a student I would think, "Isn't education supposed to be free. Of course we understand as adults that nothing in life is really free but seriously how do you explain to a 7 year old that in order to get better books and smaller classes your parents need to pay to send you to a private school? There has to be a way to change this fact.
Unfortunately some students are paying everyday for this so-called "free education". They may not be writing checks or paying as they enter the door. But every time they have to tape books together, continue to use chalkboards, sit in broken desks and cram into a classroom with 40 other students, they are paying. So, I ask again, Is Education Really Free?

  1. Wow this is a very good topic. Thanks for putting this up Marcey. It is so sad about the state of education. If I let myself be decived I could belive you where talking about schools in a 3rd world country. But not so. I feel American society as a whole has let down the educational system. The morale decay is the main culprit. America as a nation has turned it's back on God. So these are mere symtptoms like the recession, the decline of the dollar, and social security going bankrupt. Since America wants no part of God he let America have all of it's idols. Men and women try to gain financial freedom at their childerns expense. They focus so much on aquiring things they don't spend enough time with their kids. Men make babies and don't stay in the home to raise them. Women or Men don't follow God's way of marriage so at the first sign of trouble the seperate or divorce. Which most of the time leaves one parent in the home. That one parent has to do the work of two. Nobody really has enough time to follow up with the child or even care if they are doing school work or home work. Teachers can't make the childern do their homework some don't even care. I know all over America teachers are getting laid off. Some have had their benefits cut. Who wants to do the same work or do harder work for the same pay? I don't. It is proven fact children learn in many differnt ways and speeds. 1 teacher 40 students 1 class room spells failure in so man ways. Only the smartest and the most disruptive will get the attention they need. I do feel by being a father that it is first the parent's then the school's responsibility to ensure the children's education. Most parents need to hold the elected politicains accountable because we all who own homes or property in which we pay property taxes for. Which fund the schools in our area. If the parents don't own property and are not active voters then who is gonna make the politicains do right. Cause we all know most of them are corrupt.
